Chalk Paint Questions, Answered
Do I need to wax Alchemy chalk paint?
No. Alchemy cures to a water-resistant finish on its own, so you do not have to wax it to protect your piece. Wax is optional if you love that soft, buffed sheen or want to add a little depth, but it is purely for the look. Skipping it is one of the things I appreciate about this line.
What surfaces does Terracotta stick to?
Terracotta grips beautifully on wood, laminate, glass, and metal, which makes it wonderfully versatile for all sorts of pieces. The one thing that matters is a good clean first, so give the surface a proper wipe-down to lift any grease or grime. On a really slick, glossy surface I still like the peace of mind of a quick scuff.
Is Alchemy chalk paint easy to distress?
Yes, and it is one of the joys of working with it. Once it is dry, it sands back softly along edges and raised details for that gentle, timeworn look. Go lightly with a fine sanding pad and build up the distressing until it feels right to you.
How many coats of Terracotta will I need?
Most pieces look beautifully full in just one to two coats of Terracotta thanks to its rich pigment load. A single coat can work over a lighter base, but two coats give you the deepest, most even color if you are covering something dark or heavily grained. Let each coat dry fully before deciding if you need another.
Do I need to prime first?
In most cases, no. Alchemy is designed for minimal prep, so a clean, dry, dust-free surface is usually all it needs to bond beautifully. On very glossy laminate or a piece with stains you want to block, a quick scuff sand or a stain-blocking primer gives you extra peace of mind.
